HSE launches easy read guides to support an inclusive workplace

A new series of easy read guides has been launched to support disabled workers and those with long-term health conditions.

Easy read is a format that makes written information more accessible through plain language, short sentences, and clear visuals. It is widely used to support individuals with learning disabilities and is also beneficial for those who speak English as a second language.

Six new guides have been added to the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) existing disabled workers’ resources, designed to support recruitment and retention of disabled workers and workers with long-term health conditions, and provide managers with practical advice for creating an inclusive, supportive working environment.

These guides complement the established Talking Toolkit, which helps managers structure effective, supportive conversations and promote a proactive approach to workplace health.

Content overview

Guide 1: Outlines the law and the rights of disabled workers.

Guides 2–6: Conversation-based guidance aligned with the Talking Toolkit, covering:

  • Taking an inclusive approach to workplace health
  • Identifying and addressing workplace barriers
  • Making reasonable adjustments to meet workers’ needs

Each conversation guide includes sample questions for managers, helping them initiate meaningful dialogue and build trust with workers who may need additional support.
