MHFA England – Adult Mental Health Awareness (1/2 day) course

Course delivered by Mark Barrett, who is an Instructor Member approved by MHFA England to deliver Adult MHFA courses for Woodward SHE Ltd.

Course Overview

This 1/2 day course raises awareness of mental health. It covers:

  • What mental health is and how to challenge stigma.
  • A basic knowledge of some common mental health issues.
  • An introduction to looking after your own mental health and maintaining wellbeing.
  • Confidence to support someone in distress or who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

Format

  • This is a half day course delivered either face-to-face or via online video conferencing.
  • Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and workshop activities.
  • We limit numbers to 25 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn.

Takeaways

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A certificate of attendance to say you are Mental Health Aware.
  • A manual to refer to whenever you need it.

MHFA England Mental Health First Aid (2 day) course

Course delivered by Mark Barrett, who is an Instructor Member approved by MHFA England to deliver Adult MHFA courses for Woodward SHE Ltd.

Course Overview

This online course trains you as a Mental Health First Aider, giving you:

  • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing.
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues.
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress.
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening.
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix.

Format

  • This is an online course delivered through the MHFA England Online Learning Hub.
  • Learning takes place through four live training sessions, spread across two weeks, with self-learning activities in between. See course structure section below for more detail.
  • Each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan.
  • We limit numbers to 12 people per course [rather that the usual 16] so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported while they learn.

Session 1 – Introduction to the course and Mental Health First Aid
Individual learning (1 hour) & Live session (2 hours 30 minutes)

Session 2 – First Aid for suicidal crisis and depression
Individual learning (2 hours) & Live session (2 hours 30 minutes)

Session 3 – Anxiety, eating disorders and self-harm
Individual learning (2 hours) & Live session (2 hours 30 minutes)

Session 4 – Psychosis, recovery and Mental Health First Aid action planning
Individual learning (2 hours) & Live session (2 hours 30 minutes)
